Crystal Snowflakes!

Last night in doing some searching for Christmas ideas, I came across this recipe for making crystal snowflakes from Borax and water.

You can find the recipe/instructions here:

http://chemistry.about.com/cs/howtos/ht/boraxsnowflake.htm

So we made these this morning and they were done by just after dinner! They crystallized very quickly which is wonderful! They turned out very pretty! We did learn from trial and error that the snowflake form needs to be completely immersed into the liquid so that crystals will form on the whole thing.

Here are a couple of pictures and below is a slideshow of the whole procedure and results. We plan to make more tomorrow plus try out doing some sugar ones…which will take much longer to crystallize.

Homeschooling..twice the kids, twice the fun!

I am helping out a friend who has gone back to college recently by watching/homeschooling her kids with mine a couple of days a week. It is always a lot of fun and the kids all get along, so that is always a plus!!

I took a few pictures today of everyone at various stages of school or fun! The little girls have made “houses/forts” throughout the day in addition to my youngest deciding it was time to make Fall/Thanksgiving crafts already! (I didn’t get a picture of those yet!)

Anyway, just thought I would share! The kids have done really well today with getting things accomplished.

My kids are listening to the online science class we are doing. It has been a great learning tool thus far!

See the information here…you can still sign up and do the classes at your leisure as all sessions are being recorded and all information is archived!!

(My oldest is looking down at our kitten which she has inside her jacket at the moment!)

Here is the new kitten…it will be able to go to a new home in a few weeks! It is about 7 1/2 weeks old now!

Why is Creation Important?

By Felice Gerwitz

Creation Science Kids Class–starts September 22nd!!

Perhaps you have never given much thought to the topic of Creation, the effect it has on people’s lives, or how much it shapes one’s belief system. I know that for years I fell into this category. When faced with evolutionary claims I ignored most, considering them false. While I believed the Bible, considered it to contain the truth of how the world began, believed it was the inspired Word of God and infallible, I had no idea how to respond to those who didn’t. I began to seriously study the topic when I became a homeschool parent and “happened” to meet Jill Whitlock who had once been an agnostic and now was a Christian and Creation Scientist. She showed me many evidences for Creation and thus my fascination with the topic began.

Recently, I was lamenting to the Lord. (I do this from time to time!) I knew I must have misunderstood His call to write and teach others about this topic of Creation. You see it was the Christmas season and I was caught up with the duties of wife, mother and homeschool parent. I was also trying to get the third novel in the mystery series (TruthSeekersMysterySeries.com) my daughter and I had co-authored to print. Even after having it professionally edited every time I read the document I found more and more typos. I was dismayed. The deadline for the first week of December had passed. Therefore, my lament to the Lord!

Yet, God in his infinite wisdom and mercy indeed showed me His will. Of all places it was while shopping at a local membership only store. Here, I noticed a nativity I wished to purchase. Being a bit pricey I wanted to consult my husband. Later, when returning to buy it, I offered to take my newly married nephew and his wife to shop at the store. All these things were in God’s perfect plan. The nativity was encased in glass, and there, perched on the shepherd’s shoulder, was an expensive linen calling card. I would never have plucked it off, but my nephew had no qualms about sticking his hand into the scene, pulling it away, and handing it to me. There was my answer.

As I read the front of the card tears stung my eyes.  I could barely open the card to see whose signature it contained… I wanted to write to this person and let them know how much I disagreed! I wanted to tell the person there was hope! There is a God and He is Love! Imagine my surprise when I saw the signature was the Darwinian evolutionary fish! I was stunned. Later, as I read the card I realized the Lord had allowed me to see it. It was as if He was saying, “You see, Felice? When people embrace a belief in evolution that does not include me they are left to their own devices.” Indeed they are. Christians are not fools as this card extols. Christians have it right! This topic is very relevant and important. It should be at the forefront of your education and taught to children of all ages.

But, where do you begin? First, become armed with information. Just believing the Scriptures tell the truth, while commendable is only the beginning. You must understand that is a volatile topic. Unfortunately, the topic of Creation vs. evolution is not only controversial but it is difficult to discuss. Tempers at times flare and the conversation can get out of control. Regrettably this is a way to insure the doors will remain closed instead of open. The fear of those who believe evolution is real. Their fear stems from the following fact: if evolution is discredited, the entire humanistic worldview would go up in smoke!

Do you realize that not one of Darwin’s theories some 144+ years after they were first proposed has ever been proven? The theory of evolution has exerted influence over our world and culture. Humanists believe man is a “natural phenomenon” just like plants and animals. They believe the mind and soul just happened and they were not supernaturally created.

But how do we arm ourselves and our children to logically discuss the topic? Remember, before every discussion pray for the right words and trust in the Lord. He makes crooked paths straight!

Inquisitiveness: Earth — “Earthballs”

Here are some pictures from the “Earthballs” the kids made with Dad last week while I was working. I was able to sample them when I got home–they tasted really good and were huge!

My oldest daughter and husband worked together to do the meatballs and take these pictures!

They did talk about what each part of the “Earthball” was supposed to represent in relation to the real Earth. We also followed up the next day during our reading time about the layers of the Earth.

I can assure you that your children won’t forget the basic layers of the Earth if they work to make Earthballs!

Here we have the makings of the core and mantle (peanut put in the center of the cheese cube).

Here is Dad forming the crust of our Earthball.

Some of the Earthballs prior to cooking.

Two of the finished Earthballs.

Cutting the Earthball…

First view of the Earthball layers — the core wanted to slide out of the mantle!

A better view with the layers in place–before being consumed for dinner!

New Unit: Inquisitiveness – Earth

We began a new unit a couple of weeks ago, though it is taking us a long time to get through everything because of our schedule!

We use the KONOS curriculum. We are currently also subscribing to the online co-op that they have started offering for Volume 2. It has been soooo helpful this year! You can not imagine the amount of teacher training you get from listening to/watching a master teacher/curriculum author teach you how to teach your own children! It is awesome! You should check it out at: www.konos.com and www.homeschoolmentor.com

Here are some pictures of what we covered the first day!

We read about/reviewed the atmosphere of the earth, talked about what it might be like as you go through each level and the kids drew a diagram of the layers also. (Above, the kids working on their drawings–youngest did the layers of the Earth first on his own!. Below, my diagram on the board for the younger ones to refer to as we talked/drew.)

This is the diagram I drew as we discussed what gases are in the atmosphere. The diagram on the left is what the kids guessed for amount of the various gases. The right is what they actually are (as well as I could draw them!).

This is what our table looked like after we finished our “formal” studies for the day and the kids brought out all the rocks we have collected in the past (we will be studying rocks in the upcoming weeks also) and started sorting and looking at them.

I will get more posted as I can!
